The simple answer

Google Demand Gen campaigns use images, video, product feeds, and audience signals to reach people across visual Google surfaces before or while they are considering a purchase.

Depending on current campaign eligibility and settings, ads can appear across YouTube—including Shorts—Discover, Gmail, Maps, the Google Display Network, and other Google inventory.

Demand Gen is not a replacement for Search. Search responds to someone typing a need. Demand Gen tries to create or capture interest while the person is watching, browsing, or checking email.

Demand Gen vs. Search campaigns

Question Search Demand Gen
What starts the opportunity? A person searches for something Google identifies a person likely to engage or convert
Main creative Text ads and assets Images, video, carousel, product-feed ads, and text
Best strength Capturing existing intent Reaching and developing potential demand
Main risk Paying for the wrong searches Paying for attention that never becomes revenue
Best measurement Calls, leads, purchases, revenue Conversions plus channel-level lift and assisted impact when available

A business with limited budget and strong high-intent search demand will often start with Search. Demand Gen becomes more useful when the business has strong creative, dependable tracking, and a reason to reach beyond people already searching.

Where Demand Gen ads appear

Google’s available inventory continues to expand. As of August 30, 2026, Google says Demand Gen can reach people across surfaces including:

Placement availability can depend on the ad format, campaign settings, account eligibility, and product changes. Review the live campaign preview instead of assuming every asset will show everywhere.

Google also began allowing eligible advertisers to move Display campaigns into Demand Gen in June 2026, with additional migration steps planned later. Treat any Display-to-Demand-Gen migration notice as an account-specific project, not a reason to rebuild every campaign immediately.

When Demand Gen is a good fit

Demand Gen is worth testing when:

Common fits include ecommerce, travel, software, education, events, and services where customers research before taking action.

When Demand Gen should wait

Delay the test when:

Demand Gen can buy many inexpensive visits while producing few customers if the creative attracts attention without connecting to the offer.

The creative you need

A complete asset set gives Google more opportunities to match the message to the placement.

Prepare:

Google’s current Demand Gen specifications recommend common image ratios including 1:1, 1.91:1, and 4:5, plus video formats such as 16:9, 9:16, 4:5, and 1:1. Check the current specification page before production because sizes and eligibility can change.

The same idea should work across formats, but do not merely crop every image. A vertical ad needs safe space for interface elements and a subject large enough to understand on a phone.

How to choose an audience

Demand Gen can use audience groups such as:

Audience choices can guide the system, but Google may expand beyond the exact selections depending on the campaign settings. Keep the business’s location, exclusions, and customer-acquisition goal clear.

How to build the first Demand Gen test

Step 1: Choose one business result

Use a purchase, qualified lead, or another meaningful action. Do not mix page visits with revenue-producing outcomes and call them equal.

Step 2: Pick one clear audience idea

Examples include past site visitors, a customer-based lookalike, or people researching a defined need. Avoid stacking many unrelated audience ideas into the same first test.

Step 3: Build a complete creative set

Use several messages and formats. Each creative should communicate the problem, offer, proof, and next step quickly.

Step 4: Use a suitable landing page

The page should continue the same promise as the ad. A strong video about one service should not send everyone to a generic homepage.

Step 5: Choose the bidding goal deliberately

Match the bidding strategy to the available data and the result the business values. Do not use conversion-based bidding with broken conversion tracking.

Step 6: Protect proven campaigns

Set a separate test budget. Do not cut a profitable Search campaign solely to fund an unproven visual campaign.

Step 7: Allow the campaign to gather evidence

Google advises allowing roughly 50 conversion events before major bidding changes when possible. Low-volume businesses may need a longer test or a more realistic early milestone.

Step 8: Judge customers, not just clicks

Review spend, conversions, conversion value, lead quality, new customers, and revenue. Cheap traffic is not automatically useful traffic.

Demand Gen vs. Meta Ads

Both platforms can reach people before they search, and both depend heavily on creative.

Google has strong signals from Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, and its wider ecosystem. Meta has strong signals from activity across Facebook and Instagram. Neither platform is universally better.

Run a controlled test when the business has enough budget. Keep the offer and measurement comparable, then judge which channel creates incremental customers at an acceptable cost. Our Google Ads vs. Facebook Ads guide provides the broader decision framework.

The simple rule

Use Demand Gen when you are ready to turn good creative into new demand—and can measure whether that attention becomes customers.

Start with Search when the business still has obvious high-intent searches to capture. Add Demand Gen when creative, tracking, and budget are ready for a controlled expansion.

Google Demand Gen FAQ

Is Demand Gen the same as Display?

No. Demand Gen is a campaign type with audience, creative, bidding, and inventory options that span several Google surfaces. Google is also moving eligible Display activity into the Demand Gen environment over time.

Is Demand Gen the same as YouTube Ads?

No. YouTube is an important part of Demand Gen inventory, but eligible Demand Gen ads can also appear on other Google surfaces.

Does Demand Gen use keywords?

It does not work like a Search campaign bidding on exact keyword traffic. Search terms can help form custom audience segments, but the campaign reaches people across visual inventory.

Can a local service business use Demand Gen?

Yes, especially for visually demonstrable or higher-consideration services. The business still needs accurate location settings, strong creative, and call or lead-quality tracking.

Should Demand Gen replace a profitable Search campaign?

Usually no. It serves a different role. Protect the campaign already capturing profitable demand and fund Demand Gen as a separate test.
